Sanctuary

Sanctuary is an American heavy metal band founded in Seattle in 1985, known for their intricate guitar work and high-pitched vocals that became emblematic of the power metal subgenre. The band's debut album, "Refuge Denied" (1987), produced by Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, introduced their aggressive yet melodic approach to metal and quickly established their position in the metal scene. With a sound that was both epic and raw, Sanctuary garnered a loyal following, particularly with songs like "Battle Angels" and "Die for My Sins."

Following up with their sophomore effort, "Into the Mirror Black" (1990), Sanctuary offered more mature songwriting and complex arrangements, solidifying their reputation for crafting thought-provoking and intense music. Despite critical acclaim and a burgeoning fan base, internal tensions and the shifting musical landscape led to their disbandment in 1992. Sanctuary’s lead vocalist, Warrel Dane, and bassist, Jim Sheppard, went on to form the band Nevermore. Sanctuary experienced a resurgence in interest and reunited in 2010, releasing "The Year the Sun Died" in 2014, demonstrating their enduring appeal and musical evolution. Tragically, Warrel Dane passed away in 2017, leaving a legacy of influential music that the band commemorated with "Inception," a collection of pre-production demos from 1986, that emphasized the raw talent and potential of their early days. Sanctuary continues to celebrate their history, evidenced by the 30th anniversary edition of "Into The Mirror Black," a testament to the band's lasting impact on heavy metal.
