Jerry Garcia Band

The Jerry Garcia Band was the primary side project of Jerry Garcia, best known as the iconic lead guitarist and vocalist of the Grateful Dead. Formed in 1975, the band gave Garcia a creative outlet outside of the Dead, where he could explore a rich blend of rock, rhythm and blues, soul, gospel, and reggae. Known for its relaxed vibe and lengthy, improvisational live performances, the group became a beloved fixture in the jam band scene and cultivated its own dedicated following.

Over the years, the Jerry Garcia Band featured a rotating lineup of talented musicians, with longtime contributors like bassist John Kahn playing a central role. The band’s setlists often included covers of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Smokey Robinson, and Jimmy Cliff, reflecting Garcia's wide-ranging musical tastes. Their live shows, particularly those at venues like The Warfield in San Francisco, are celebrated for their soulful energy and spontaneity, many of which have been preserved in the acclaimed GarciaLive album series.
