M.P.N.Ponnuswamy

M.P.N. Ponnuswamy was a celebrated Nadaswaram maestro, known for his mastery of this traditional South Indian classical instrument. He often performed alongside his brother, Madurai M.P.N. Sethuraman, and together they were recognized as prolific exponents of Carnatic music’s classical wind instrument, the Nadaswaram. Their collaborations featured in numerous recordings and concerts, showcasing not only their technical skill but deep musicality in interpreting classical ragas, as well as accompanying temple and folk music traditions using the Nadaswaram and Thavil drums.

Hailing from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, M.P.N. Ponnuswamy’s artistry contributed significantly to sustaining and popularizing the Nadaswaram, an instrument regarded as one of the loudest non-brass acoustic instruments in the world, deeply embedded in South Indian culture and ceremonies. Their joint albums and live performances remain valued examples of traditional Carnatic instrumental music, continuing to inspire listeners and musicians alike.
