Sofia Cosma

Sofia Cosma was a remarkable pianist known for her incredible talent and resilience in the face of adversity. Born in 1914 in Smorgon, Belarus, she began studying piano at the age of five and was recognized as a prodigy by her teens. Sofia gained international recognition when she participated in the International Piano Competition in Vienna in 1933. Her life took a dramatic turn when she was imprisoned in a Siberian prison camp for nine years. After her release, she rebuilt her career in Romania, eventually becoming a soloist with the Romanian Philharmonic. In 1981, Sofia defected to the United States, where she continued to perform and teach until her passing in 2011.

Her discography includes notable recordings such as "A Suitcase Full of Chocolate," "Plays Bach-Busoni, Beethoven, Brahms & Chopin," and "Recital de pian," showcasing her mastery of classical repertoire. Sofia Cosma's story is as much about her musical achievements as it is about her enduring spirit in the face of political turmoil.
