Jacob Gade
Jacob Gade was a Danish composer and violinist best known for his iconic piece “Jalousie (Tango Tzigane),” written in 1925. Originally composed as accompaniment for silent films, “Jalousie” became an international hit and remains one of the most recognizable tangos in classical and popular music circles. Its dramatic flair and sweeping violin melodies have made it a favorite among orchestras and soloists for nearly a century.
Gade began his career performing in movie theaters and dance halls before serving as the conductor of the Palads Cinema Orchestra in Copenhagen. Though “Jalousie” was his standout success, he composed numerous other works, particularly in the light classical and film music genres. His legacy lives on not just through recordings, but also through the Jacob Gade Foundation, which supports young Danish musicians in their studies.
