His 1950s recordings, including a fiery *La bohème* and a timeless *Norma* with Callas, showcase his knack for balancing drama and lyrical flow. Though less flashy than some of his peers, Votto’s steady hand and deep respect for tradition made him a backbone of the Italian opera scene until his death in 1985.
