State Academic Symphony Orchestra

The State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia (often known by its Russian abbreviation, SASO) has been a powerhouse of classical music since its founding in 1936. Originally called the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, this ensemble earned its "Academic" title in 1972 as a nod to its artistic excellence. Under legendary conductors like Evgeny Svetlanov (who led the orchestra for decades), they’ve become synonymous with rich interpretations of Russian repertoire—something their recent Glazunov-heavy releases (like Symphonies Nos. 1-7 and lesser-known tone poems) totally back up. Based in Moscow, they’re all about balancing grand tradition with fresh energy, touring globally while keeping Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, and other homegrown composers front and center. Think of them as the ultimate ambassadors for Russia’s orchestral legacy—polished, passionate, and always ready to dive deep into those sweeping Romantic melodies.
