INXS is an Australian rock band that rose to international fame in the 1980s and 1990s with a string of hits that blended new wave, rock, and funk to create a signature sound that was both danceable and full of raw energy. Formed in Sydney in 1977, the group originally consisted of the brothers Andrew, Jon, and Tim Farriss, along with Michael Hutchence on lead vocals, Garry Gary Beers on bass, and Kirk Pengilly on guitar and saxophone. Their early work was characterized by a new wave/ska influence, but they quickly evolved, embracing a more rock-oriented sound.
The band's breakthrough came with their album "Listen Like Thieves" and the single "What You Need" which marked their ascent on the American charts. Their follow-up album, "Kick," released in 1987, became a global phenomenon; it spawned massive hits such as "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," and "Never Tear Us Apart." The charismatic frontman Michael Hutchence became an iconic figure in music, his soulful performances and sex appeal helping to propel the band's fame. Tragedy struck INXS in 1997 when Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room in Sydney, a moment that shocked fans worldwide and signaled a new chapter for the band. Despite various line-up changes and attempts to replace Hutchence, INXS never quite recaptured their earlier heights, though their legacy endures, as evidenced by the continued remixing and remastering of their catalog, including hits like "Just Keep Walking" and the 2005 post-Hutchence hit "Pretty Vegas," with new singer JD Fortune, following their reality show "Rock Star: INXS." Their music maintains a prominent place in pop culture, resonating with generations of listeners and reminding them of the band's indelible imprint on the rock landscape.
