Chicha Libre

Chicha Libre was a Brooklyn-based musical collective known for their blend of Latin rhythms, surf music, and psychedelic pop. The band's name comes from chicha, a corn-based liquor that is popular in the Andean region, as well as a genre of Peruvian music which heavily influenced their sound. Chicha Libre was a modern exponent of this genre, which traditionally combined Colombian cumbia, Andean melodies, and psychedelic surf guitar. The band managed to weave these influences with a distinctly contemporary edge, incorporating elements from various international genres.

Their preceding albums, such as "Sonido Amazonico" (2008) and "Canibalismo" (2012), showcased Chicha Libre's unique approach to their music, which contributed to the global revival of chicha music in contemporary scenes. Their EP "Cuatro Tigres" (2013) continued this tradition by offering a twist on classics from The Clash and a tribute to electronic music pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey, solidifying their place in the world music scene. Though the band's activity has simmered down in recent years, "Chicha Libre" remains a celebrated name, beloved for their ability to fuse disparate genres to create a sound that transcends cultural barriers, appealing to a diverse array of fans around the world.
