The Lonely Island is an American comedy troupe formed by Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone. Although the trio began creating live comedy skits in junior high, their fame skyrocketed in the mid-2000s when they were hired as writers for "Saturday Night Live" (SNL). During their tenure at SNL, they gained massive popularity for their digital shorts, most notably the viral hit “Lazy Sunday.” In 2009, they released their debut album, "Incredibad," which featured iconic tracks like “I'm on a Boat” and “Jizz in My Pants,” further cementing their reputation as comedic giants who could deftly blend music with humorous, off-the-wall lyrics.
Their subsequent albums and projects continued to showcase their unique blend of satire, parody, and catchy music production. “Turtleneck & Chain,” released in 2011, and 2013's “The Wack Album,” continued to garner the group a following with hits like “I Just Had Sex” and “Spring Break Anthem.” They exhibited their mastery in parodying pop culture and celebrity with the mockumentary-style film and accompanying soundtrack, "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping," in 2016. The Lonely Island also stretched their creative muscles with "The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience," a Netflix special released in 2019, which humorously imagines famed baseball sluggers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire as rap icons. Through their work, The Lonely Island sustained their legacy as pioneers of digital comedy, expertly using music as a vehicle for their distinctive brand of humor.
