Prophets of Rage was a rap rock supergroup that formed in 2016, born of the fusion of members from three significant bands of the 1990s and 2000s: Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy, and Cypress Hill. The supergroup consisted of Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk from Rage Against the Machine, Chuck D and DJ Lord from Public Enemy, and B-Real from Cypress Hill. The name "Prophets of Rage" is derived from the Public Enemy song of the same name. Instigated by the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the band's members sought to address the political concerns of the time, delivering a message of resistance and activism through their hard-hitting music.
The band, which was described as an "elite task force of revolutionary musicians," aimed to counter cultural complacency and serve as a sonic protest against social injustice. Their music was a blend of rap, hard rock, and funk, featuring socially aware lyrics and the aggressive, electric energy characteristic of their previous bands. While their tenure was short-lived, their impact was no less bold; Prophets of Rage released one self-titled studio album in 2017 and an EP titled "The Party's Over" in 2016. In the span of their career, they toured extensively and headlined numerous shows, channeling the spirit of their message through a series of powerful live performances. Notable songs like "Made With Hate," "Heart Afire," and "Pop Goes The Weapon" showcase their focused topicality and intensity. The group disbanded in 2019 following the reunion of Rage Against the Machine, leaving behind a potent legacy as musical activists.
