Chanpan is an energetic Asian American trio based in New York City, made up of lead vocalist Grace Dumdaw and identical twins Lance and Matthew Tran. The band blends genres like alt pop, drum and bass, and indie dance to create a unique sound full of jazzy soul, breakbeat, and catchy grooves. Their music often reflects their shared immigrant backgrounds and cultural identities, with Grace bringing her Kachin heritage and experience growing up as a refugee from Myanmar, and the Tran twins drawing on their Chinese American roots. These diverse influences inform not only their sounds but also their lyrical themes, which include political activism and community empowerment.
Starting out busking on the streets of Chinatown, Chanpan quickly gained attention through viral videos and praised features in outlets like Vogue and the New York Times. They released their debut single "jungle" in 2023, which channels their personal and political histories, and have since put out popular tracks including "endlessly," "luigi's mansione," and "election year." Known for their lively performances and authentic storytelling, they've sold out NYC headline shows and toured with Japanese artist Haru Nemuri. Chanpan is continuing to build momentum with new music and aims to bring their message and distinctive sound to audiences worldwide.
