Ustad Vilayat Khan

Ustad Vilayat Khan was one of the greatest sitar maestros of the 20th century and a towering figure in Indian classical music. Born in 1928 into a legendary musical family, he was a direct descendant of the Imdadkhani gharana, a lineage known for its profound influence on the sitar's evolution. Vilayat Khan is widely credited with developing the "gayaki ang" (vocal style) of sitar playing, which emulates the nuances and expressiveness of the human voice. His playing combined immaculate technique with deep emotion, captivating audiences both in India and around the world.

Throughout his illustrious career, he performed at major venues across the globe and collaborated with some of the finest musicians of his time. Despite being offered several high civilian honors in India, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, Khan famously declined them, citing concerns about the fairness of award distribution in the arts.
