Rohan De Saram

Rohan De Saram is a renowned cellist, distinguished for his versatility and mastery of his instrument. Born on March 9, 1939, in Sheffield, UK, De Saram has built a career that spans over several decades, establishing him as a cherished figure in classical and contemporary music. He began playing the cello at the age of 11 and quickly showed exceptional talent, benefiting from the tutelage of leading musical educators such as Gaspar Cassadó, for whom he displayed undeniable affinity and musicianship.

Remarkably, De Saram's repertoire is as expansive as it is impressive, including traditional classical pieces as well as avant-garde compositions. He is perhaps best known for his 40-year tenure with the Arditti Quartet, which he joined in 1977, where his collaboration pioneered the expansion of the string quartet repertory. During that period, De Saram worked closely with some of the greatest composers of the 20th century, such as Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, and Elliott Carter, to help create, premiere, and record new works. After leaving the Arditti Quartet in 2005, Rohan has continued his career as a soloist, delivering performances that are both technically profound and emotionally resonant.

His discography echoes his passion for both established and contemporary classical works, with recent releases including meticulous interpretations of Prokofiev and Bax, as well as enthralling performances of 20th-century British compositions for solo cello. His recordings of "J.S. Bach: Cello Suites Nos. 1-6" demonstrate an enduring commitment to the core cello literature, while "Requiebros" and others highlight his exquisite capacity to intertwine the rich tonal qualities of his instrument with intricate emotional expression. Widely respected for his musical insights and intellectual depth, Rohan De Saram continues to inspire audiences around the world, forging a legacy that spans both musical epochs and geographical borders.
