Anner Bylsma

Anner Bylsma was a renowned Dutch cellist revered for his performances on both modern and baroque cello. Born on February 17, 1934, in The Hague, Bylsma distinguished himself in the music world through his deep understanding of early music performance and his seamless execution of both period and modern cello repertoire. A disciple of care and scholarship, Bylsma was known for his rich, articulate sound and for his contribution to the historical performance practice movement. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and, in 1957, won the prestigious Prix Italia, an achievement that helped catapult his career onto the international stage.

Throughout his illustrious career, Bylsma was equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, and as a mentor teaching at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and later at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. His discography is extensive, including seminal recordings of the Bach Cello Suites, which are held in high regard for their authenticity and emotional depth. Bylsma ceaselessly explored the cello repertoire, both old and new, as shown by his recordings of works by lesser-known composers like Leonardo Leo and Luigi Boccherini, alongside the major works of Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Haydn. His commitment to musical expression and historical context made him an influential figure, one who left an indelible mark on cellists and audiences around the world. Anner Bylsma passed away on July 25, 2019, but his legacy endures through his recordings and the generations of cellists he inspired.
