Pharmakon is the noise project of Margaret Chardiet, a New York-based musician and artist whose work has become a staple in the world of experimental and industrial music. Chardiet’s haunting performances and visceral soundscapes explore the complexities of the human condition, drawing on themes of body horror, existential angst, and catharsis. The project's conception dates back to 2007, but it truly garnered critical attention with the release of Pharmakon's debut LP, "Abandon", in 2013.
Pharmakon’s discography is a relentless confrontation with the darker edges of human experience, a trait exemplified in albums such as "Bestial Burden" (2014), which was written shortly after Chardiet underwent major surgery, probing into the visceral nature of the body and its vulnerability. This was followed by "Contact" (2017), an album that furthered her exploration into the collective unconscious and the bodily response to sounds and frequencies. Her latest full-length creation, "Devour" (2019), continues this trajectory with a harrowing audio portrayal of self-cannibalization and societal collapse, reflecting themes of self-destruction and the inherent violence of human nature. Recordings like "Spit It Out," "Self-Regulating System," "No Natural Order," and "Transmission" are not merely auditory experiences but rather provocative encounters, challenging the listeners with their unapologetic, raw sonic intensity and thought-provoking narratives.
