Mark Bernes (born Mark Naumovich Bernes; October 8, 1911 – August 16, 1969) was a hugely popular Soviet actor and singer whose warm, intimate vocal style made him one of the defining voices of mid‑20th‑century Russian-language music and film. He first became widely known through cinema, appearing in major Soviet movies from the late 1930s onward, and he often performed songs connected to the films he starred in—bringing a conversational, heartfelt delivery that stood out from more formal stage singing of the era.
Bernes is especially associated with World War II–era and postwar classics that became cultural touchstones, including “Dark Is the Night” (“Тёмная ночь”) and “In the Dugout” (“В землянке”), along with later favorites like “I Love You, Life” (“Я люблю тебя, жизнь”). Many of his recordings have been repeatedly reissued and remastered over the decades, reflecting his lasting place in Russian musical heritage.
