David Shea is a trailblazing composer and sound artist from New York City's downtown experimental scene, where he cut his teeth in the late '80s and early '90s playing in John Zorn's ensembles and diving deep into improvisation, jazz, and world music influences from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. A master of turntables, samplers, piano, singing bowls, and electronics, he's spent decades blending classical traditions, musique concrète, Eastern and Western rituals, and cutting-edge tech into hypnotic collages—think landmark albums like *Tower of Mirrors*, *Satyricon*, and *Rituals*, plus recent gems such as *The Thousand Buddha Caves*, *The Book of Rituals*, and *Una Noto Solo*.
These days, after relocating from NYC around 2000 and settling permanently in Melbourne, Australia, Shea tours Asia, lectures at uni, and crafts immersive works with ensembles featuring guzheng, percussion, and field recordings, exploring everything from Silk Road mysticism to piano solos on Room40.
