MU330, formed in St. Louis, Missouri in 1988, is a ska punk band known for their energetic performances and catchy, brass-infused melodies. The band took its name from a music class at St. Louis University High School, where many of the original members went to school. MU330's lineup, which has changed somewhat over the years, was stabilized early on around the core consisting of Dan Potthast on vocals and guitar, Rob Bell on bass, Chris Diebold on bass, Ted Moll on drums, and several horn players with Nick Baur often taking on the role of trombonist.
The band's discography is marked by their humorous, often self-deprecating lyrics layered over fast-paced ska rhythms, mingling punk aggression with the upbeat swing of traditional ska. "Press" (1994) and "Chumps On Parade" (1996) were part of their initial success during the American third wave ska boom, with subsequent albums such as "Crab Rangoon" (1997) and "MU330" (1999) solidifying their position in the genre. Venturing into the 2000s, "Ultra Panic" (2002) showcased the band's continuous evolution with a blend of ska, punk, and a growing pop sensibility. Their vivacious live performances were captured in "LIVE Oh Yeah!" (1999), while their holiday-themed EP "Winter Wonderland" (1999) offered a festive twist on their signature sound. Known for extensive touring and a dedicated fan base, MU330's influence within the ska punk community remains significant, as they continue to represent the genre's spirit of joyful nonconformity.
