Kai Winding

Kai Winding was a prominent jazz trombonist, composer, and band leader renowned for his exceptional technique and smooth, melodic approach to the trombone. Born in Aarhus, Denmark on May 18, 1922, Winding moved to the United States with his family at the age of 12. His career blossomed in the 1940s and '50s when he began playing with big bands, most notably with Benny Goodman, and later gaining considerable recognition for his work with Stan Kenton’s orchestra. In 1954, he joined forces with fellow trombonist J.J. Johnson, forming a highly acclaimed partnership that would go on to produce some of the most innovative and respected trombone collaborations in jazz.

The duo's output included such classic albums as "The Great Kai And J.J." and "Jay & Kai," both showcasing their synergy and influential contributions to modern jazz. Winding’s solo career also took flight with various albums under his name like "Trombone By Three" and "The Trombone Sound" solidifying his reputation as a leader. He continued to innovate and collaborate throughout the 60s and 70s with projects like "J&K: Stonebone" and "Trombone Summit," pushing the boundaries of the trombone in jazz. His sessions, such as "Bone appétit (The Definitive Black & Blue Sessions)" and "Lionel Hampton Presents Kai Winding," further exemplify his mastery and eclectic approach. Kai Winding’s influence on jazz trombone remains profound, leaving behind a rich legacy that bridges both the big band and bebop eras until his passing on May 6, 1983.
