Hiromitsu Agatsuma

Hiromitsu Agatsuma is a Japanese musician renowned for his masterful playing of the Tsugaru-shamisen, a traditional three-stringed instrument that originates from the Tsugaru region in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Born on July 27th, 1973, in Ibaraki Prefecture, Agatsuma began playing the shamisen at the young age of six. By infusing his music with modern influences, he has redefined the possibilities of the instrument, striking a compelling balance between traditional Japanese sounds and contemporary genres.

Throughout his career, Agatsuma has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious All-Japan Tsugaru Shamisen Competition, which he won at the age of 14. His innovation within the traditional music scene reached a pivotal point with his debut album "Agatsuma" in 2001. This was followed by a series of albums where he continued to explore and blend different musical styles, such as in "Beyond," which showcased a fusion of traditional Japanese tones with jazz, rock, and other international sounds. His recent works, such as "TSUGARU," "NuTrad," and "GEN -源-," signify a mature artist who has both deeply rooted respect for tradition and a fearless approach to innovation. Agatsuma's music has not only pushed the boundaries of the Tsugaru-shamisen but has also brought its enchanting sound to a broader global audience.
