Sluggy Ranks, born Andrew Phillip Gregory, was a Jamaican dancehall singer known for his significant contributions to the New York dancehall scene. Born in Ray Town, Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966, he relocated to Brooklyn, New York, in 1981 to pursue his music career. Sluggy Ranks gained fame for his distinctive voice and socially conscious lyrics, which set him apart from the often explicit content prevalent in dancehall music at the time. He collaborated with notable producers like Jah Life, Park Heights, and King Jammy’s, producing hits like “95% Black,” “Ghetto Youth Bust,” and “Sodom & Gomorrah.” His albums included “Settle Sluggy,” “Ghetto Youth Bust,” “Just Call Sluggy,” and “My Time,” showcasing his talent and unique style.
Sluggy Ranks’ career was marked by his involvement with prominent sound systems and his ability to captivate audiences in the U.S., Caribbean, and Europe. Unfortunately, his life was cut short in a car accident in Kingston on July 29, 2012, at the age of 45. Despite his untimely passing, Sluggy Ranks left a lasting impact on the dancehall genre with his legacy of positive cultural lyrics and powerful performances.
