The Blues Project

The Blues Project was a pioneering band that emerged from New York City's Greenwich Village folk scene in the mid-1960s. Known for blending blues, rock, folk, jazz, and psychedelic influences, the group carved out a distinctive sound that helped set the stage for the jam band movement. The original lineup included guitarist Danny Kalb, keyboardist Al Kooper (fresh off his stint with Bob Dylan), bassist Andy Kulberg, drummer Roy Blumenfeld, and guitarist Steve Katz. Their 1966 album Projections, which featured extended jams and genre-bending musicianship, is considered a classic of the era.

Although The Blues Project experienced lineup changes and a relatively short initial run, their influence was significant. Members of the band went on to form other successful acts—most notably, Al Kooper and Steve Katz co-founded Blood, Sweat & Tears. The group periodically reunited over the years for performances and recordings, continuing to attract fans with their soulful, exploratory style. Whether playing blues standards or experimenting with genre fusion, The Blues Project left its mark as one of the more adventurous groups of the '60s rock scene.
