Down is an American heavy metal supergroup formed in 1991 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The band's musical style is a blend of southern metal, sludge, and doom metal, and features members from prominent bands such as Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod. The ensemble was initially assembled by Phil Anselmo, the lead vocalist of Pantera, and the lineup consisted of Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), Todd Strange (who was later replaced by Pat Bruders), and Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod). The group's chemistry yielded a unique sound that drew on their southern roots and metal credibility, creating a cult following in the process.
Down's debut album, "Nola," released in 1995, is often lauded as a milestone in the genre of southern metal, featuring hit tracks such as "Stone the Crow." Over the years, Down has undergone various hiatuses and lineup changes but has consistently delivered powerful music, evidenced by their lengthy discography. The EP series comprising "Down IV Part I - The Purple EP" (2012) and "Down IV Part II" (2014) marked the most recent original material by the band. In these works, the band continued to cultivate an extensive fan base, offering sludgy riffs, commandingly heavy rhythms, and Anselmo's unmistakable voice, while maintaining their distinct southern edge. With the live album "Diary Of A Mad Band" showcasing their raw live performances, Down has solidified its place as a force in the metal scene, revered for both their influential studio recordings and their dynamic stage presence.
