The Anniversary was an American band that emerged from the vibrant Lawrence, Kansas music scene of the late 1990s, making a significant impression in the indie rock landscape with their blend of emo, alternative rock, and synthesizer-driven pop. Formed by Josh Berwanger (vocals, guitar), Justin Roelofs (vocals, guitar), Adrianne Verhoeven (vocals, keyboards), James David (bass), and Christian Jankowski (drums), the group quickly became known for their infectious melodies and the dynamic interplay between male and female vocals.
The band's debut album, "Designing a Nervous Breakdown" (2000), was released on the Heroes & Villains label, an imprint of Vagrant Records, and became an emblematic record of the early emo movement, distinguished by its synthesis of punk vigor and new wave textures. This was followed by "Your Majesty" (2002), which showcased a stylistic evolution with more classic rock influences and complex arrangements. Despite gaining a fervent fan base and critical acclaim, The Anniversary disbanded in 2004. Posthumously, they released "Devil On Our Side: B-Sides & Rarities," a compilation album in 2008, that included rare tracks and provided a more comprehensive look at the band's diverse capabilities. Their influence can still be heard in modern emo and indie bands, and their records continue to resonate with fans of the era.
