The Gaylads are a renowned Jamaican vocal group that was active from 1963 to 1973. Originally formed in Kingston, the group initially consisted of Harris "B.B." Seaton, Winston Delano Stewart, and Maurice Roberts. Seaton and Stewart had previously performed as the duo Winston & Bibby. Throughout their career, The Gaylads experienced several lineup changes, with Maurice Roberts being the only constant member. They were one of the top rocksteady vocal groups of their time, achieving significant success with hits like "Africa (We Want To Go)," "Joy In The Morning," and "There's A Fire." The group also provided backing vocals for influential artists such as Ken Boothe and Delroy Wilson.
The Gaylads worked with prominent producers like Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at Studio One, Sonia Pottinger, and Leslie Kong. Their music often reflected themes of love and social commentary. Despite facing challenges due to the evolving meaning of their name, The Gaylads enjoyed a successful run in the Jamaican music scene. Over the years, the group underwent changes, with Seaton and Stewart reuniting for performances in the 1990s. Maurice Roberts passed away in 2015, and B.B. Seaton in 2024, marking the end of an era for this iconic group.
