Marie-Lise Schüpbach is a Swiss oboist and English horn player born in Zurich who studied with the renowned Heinz Holliger in Freiburg im Breisgau, graduating with honors. She launched her orchestral career at the Cologne Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester before spending nearly four decades (1979–2017) as the solo English horn player with the BR Symphony Orchestra in Munich. Beyond her orchestral work, Schüpbach has remained deeply connected to her Swiss roots, serving as a long-time member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and co-founding the chamber music festival erstKlassik am Sarnersee in 2008.
In recent years, Schüpbach has become best known for her collaborative duo work with Holliger, her former teacher. The two musicians have released multiple albums together, including *Zwiegespräche* (2019) and most recently *con slancio* (2026), which features premiere recordings of Holliger's compositions alongside works by other contemporary Swiss composers. Holliger has spoken about how playing in duo with Schüpbach has opened new sonic possibilities for him, praising how their two instruments expand each other's range and palette of tone colors. Schüpbach also regularly performs chamber concerts with Holliger and other collaborators, and has toured Switzerland extensively with the Swiss Chamber Soloists.
