Andy Irvine

Andy Irvine is a prominent Irish folk musician, singer-songwriter, and a celebrated mandolin and bouzouki player, who has been an influential figure in world and traditional Irish music for several decades. Born on June 14, 1942, in London, to an Irish mother and a Scottish father, Irvine developed an early interest in the folk music revival of the 1950s and 60s, leading him to a lifelong journey through various strands of folk traditions.

A founding member of several seminal bands, including Sweeney's Men in the late 1960s, and later Planxty in the 1970s, alongside Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny, and Liam O'Flynn, Irvine has been at the forefront of Irish traditional music's evolution. His work in Planxty helped to revive Irish folk music and brought it to international audiences. Following Planxty's initial disbandment, he continued to push musical boundaries with the eclectic group, Mozaik, and through partnerships with other folk legends like Paul Brady, with whom he released the influential album "Andy Irvine/Paul Brady."

Irvine's solo career has been marked by a series of critically acclaimed albums that showcase his narrative songwriting ability, distinctive vocal style, and intricate musicianship. Each project, from "Rainy Sundays... Windy Dreams" to "Live in Telemark," exhibits his mastery of storytelling and his ability to blend various folk influences while maintaining a uniquely Irish essence. His 70th Birthday Concert at Vicar St 2012 was a celebration of his enduring talent and contribution to the music industry. Whether through his narrative-driven songs or his innovations with the bouzouki, Andy Irvine remains a pillar in the folk community, admired for his dedication to the craft and his capacity to connect generations of music enthusiasts with the rich tapestry of traditional music.
