Billy Butler was an American soul singer and songwriter born on June 7, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois. He first made his mark in the 1960s as the leader of the vocal group the Enchanters, which he formed in high school. Butler recorded for Okeh Records, with early production by Curtis Mayfield, and scored his biggest hit in 1965 with "I Can't Work No Longer," which reached #6 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart. After the Enchanters disbanded, he had a minor solo hit with "The Right Track," a beloved track in the Northern Soul scene. Later, he formed another group called Infinity, achieving several minor R&B hits and also wrote songs for artists like his brother Jerry Butler, Major Lance, and Gene Chandler. He remained an influential figure in soul music until his passing in 2015 at age 69.
This Billy Butler is distinct from the soul jazz guitarist of the same name, who was born in 1924 and had a career primarily in jazz guitar. The singer Butler’s work includes albums and compilations such as "Brunswick Essentials" and "If You Don't Like It," showcasing his lasting legacy in soul and R&B.
