Bad Brains are a pioneering American band hailing from Washington, D.C., renowned for their formidable blend of punk rock and reggae, and considered to be among the innovators of hardcore punk. Formed in 1977, originally as a jazz fusion ensemble, they took on the name Bad Brains after developing an intense admiration for punk rock. The band consists of vocalist H.R. (Human Rights), guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson. Their early work featured fast-paced punk songs with an emphasis on positivity and self-empowerment, a philosophy they called PMA (Positive Mental Attitude). As they evolved, they incorporated heavier reggae and dub elements, which would become integral to their sound and influence countless artists across various genres.
Bad Brains made a significant impact on the punk and alternative music scenes with their self-titled debut album in 1982 and 1983's follow-up, "Rock for Light," produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars. Their 1986 release "I Against I" is frequently acclaimed as one of the band's best works, infusing their hardcore punk style with heavy metal influences and furthering their reputation for musical versatility. Despite facing multiple hiatuses and lineup changes throughout their career, the band continued to produce new music and perform live. Their later works, such as "Build a Nation" (2007), "Into The Future" (2012), and live recordings like "Live at CBGB 1982," capture the enduring energy and spirit of Bad Brains' contribution to the music world. Their influence can be heard in the work of numerous artists across the punk, hardcore, metal, and alternative spectrum.
