Debabrata Biswas

Debabrata Biswas, often affectionately known as George Biswas or George-da, was a renowned Indian singer celebrated for his interpretations of Rabindra Sangeet, the songs of Rabindranath Tagore. Born in 1911 in Barisal, he later moved to Kishoreganj in the Mymensingh district. Biswas was known for his soulful and expressive voice, which brought a new depth to Tagore's compositions. He was one of the few singers who could perform Rabindra Sangeet in multiple languages, including Sanskrit, English, German, French, and Russian. His early career involved strict adherence to traditional music rules, but he later innovated by incorporating Western instruments and unconventional tempos, which sometimes led to controversy among traditionalists.

Biswas was also involved with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and the Communist Party of India. He recorded songs during the Bangladesh Liberation Movement and was known for his performances of "Ganasangit" or people's songs. His contributions to Bengali music are still cherished today, with songs like "Akash bhora surjo tara" and "Je ratey mor duarguli" remaining popular. Despite facing criticism for his unconventional style, Biswas continued to perform until his health issues forced him to stop. He passed away on August 18, 1980.
