Kostas Mountakis

Kostas Mountakis was an eminent Greek musician celebrated for his mastery in traditional Cretan music. Born on May 10, 1926, in Anogeia, a mountainous village on the island of Crete, his life's journey began in a place steeped in musical tradition which surely had a profound influence on his craft. Showing a prodigious talent for music at a young age, Mountakis took to the Cretan lyra, a pear-shaped three-stringed instrument central to the island's musical heritage, and became renowned for his virtuosic playing style.

His career was marked by an impressive body of work that spanned several decades, during which Mountakis not only recorded extensively but also performed in numerous live settings. His music was predominantly rooted in the rich traditions of Rizitika songs – the traditional Cretan music – often characterized by its emotive, free-rhythmic, and often improvised quality. Mountakis's contributions extended beyond performance as he delved into preserving the folkloric music of Crete for future generations. Albums like "His Route Through Time" and "Byzantine Treasure" suggest a keen interest in showcasing the historical depth of Greek music, while his numerous volumes of rare live recordings testify to the dynamic energy of his concerts. Kostas Mountakis passed away on February 22, 1991, leaving a legacy enshrined in the heart of Cretan musical culture.
