Lionel Bart was a British composer and lyricist best known for writing the music and lyrics for the hit musical *Oliver!* (1960), an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ *Oliver Twist*. Born in 1930 in London, Bart became one of the leading figures in British musical theatre, crafting catchy, memorable songs that brought his productions to life. In addition to *Oliver!*, he penned music for shows like *Blitz!* and *Maggie May*, and even contributed lyrics to early pop hits in the 1950s. Though financial struggles later impacted his career, his work remains beloved, with *Oliver!* frequently revived on stage and adapted into an Oscar-winning 1968 film.
