Cold Cave is the moniker for the darkwave project helmed by American musician, singer, and songwriter Wesley Eisold. Formed in 2007 after Eisold's departure from the hardcore punk scene, Cold Cave became an outlet for his explorations into synth-driven post-punk and noise pop, interwoven with themes of romantic despair and existential longing. Before his foray into the synth-pop and darkwave aesthetics with Cold Cave, Eisold was part of prominent hardcore bands such as American Nightmare (Give Up the Ghost) and Some Girls, making his shift to electronic sounds a significant departure from his previous work.
Cold Cave's sound is characterized by its lo-fi synthesisers, deep baritone vocals, and often literary lyrics, recalling the heyday of 1980s dark wave and post-punk while injecting it with a contemporary twist. Over the years, Cold Cave has released a variety of well-received works, including the critically acclaimed album "Love Comes Close" in 2009, which was later re-released in a deluxe edition. Through a series of EPs and singles, such as "You & Me & Infinity," "Glory," and "The Idea of Love," Cold Cave has solidified their presence in the modern darkwave scene. Their 2021 EP "Fate in Seven Lessons" continued to expand their discography with a collection of tracks that maintain their trademark sound, blending melodic synth lines with introspective lyrics. With the release of songs such as "Godstar," "Waving Hands," and "Promised Land," Cold Cave has demonstrated sustained creativity, as their work remains a somber ode to the ebbs and flows of the human condition and the unending search for meaning amidst the darkness.
