Alaap is a pioneering British Asian band credited as the founders of British Bhangra. Formed in Southall, West London in 1977, they started as a traditional bhangra band playing at community events and weddings. Their breakthrough came in 1979 with the album "Teri Chunni de Sitare," widely recognized as marking the birth of the 'Southall scene' in British Bhangra music.
Led by Channi Singh, Alaap gained prominence for blending traditional Punjabi folk music with contemporary Western influences. In 1984, they collaborated with Deepak Kazanchi on the album "Ten Chunm De Sitare," which introduced electronic dance music elements to their sound. The BBC has described Alaap as the 'most prolific' bhangra band, highlighting their significant impact on the genre's development in the UK.
