Ava Inferi was formed in the Algarve region of Portugal in 2005, founded by guitarist and composer Rune Eriksen, better known for his prior work with the influential black metal band Mayhem and by his stage name, Blasphemer. Alongside Norwegian singer Carmen Simões, whose ethereal voice became the hallmark of the band, Ava Inferi carved out a distinctive niche within the gothic/doom metal scene. With an emphasis on atmospheric and melodious compositions, Ava Inferi's music is characterized by a blend of heavy guitar riffs, rhythmic intensity, and hauntingly beautiful vocal lines, often delving into dark themes and emotional depths.
The band's discography highlights their evolution and refinement of sound across four studio albums, starting with their debut "Burdens" in 2006, which introduced listeners to their melancholic yet powerful style. "The Silhouette" followed in 2007, further establishing their reputation for crafting immersive soundscapes. With the release of "Blood of Bacchus" in 2009, the band continued to expand their sonic palette, infusing their gothic metal roots with more diverse influences. "Onyx," which came out in 2011, is considered a high point in their career, delivering a mature and sophisticated listening experience that retains the haunting quality inherent to their music. Although no longer active, the band's legacy and the entrancing allure of their music were celebrated with the release of "The Best of Ava Inferi," a compilation that encapsulates their contributions to the genre and stands as a monument to their darkly poetic artistry.
