Meejah

Meejah is a Danish-Korean post-rock and experimental band formed in 2017. The band's name is derived from an alternative spelling of "media," symbolizing the artist as a medium for inspiration. Meejah is led by Mai Soon Young Øvlisen, a Korean adoptee raised in Denmark, who serves as the vocalist, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist. Mai's background as a transnational adoptee deeply influences her music, as she explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, and personal roots. The band's music often blends Nordic melancholia with elements of Korean culture, including traditional "pansori" singing techniques. Their notable releases include the concept album "Queen of Spring," which explores themes of identity and cultural connection through a mix of ambient guitars, soaring vocals, and traditional Korean elements.

Meejah's lineup includes Andreas Isbrandt Løvenskjold on lead guitar, Asger Sørensen on bass, Emil Lake on drums, and Daniel Nayberg on live effects and tracks. The band has performed in both Denmark and South Korea, connecting with audiences through their unique blend of Eastern and Western musical influences. Meejah's music has been featured on platforms like KEXP, highlighting their exploration of transnational identity and cultural fusion.
