Spirit Of The West

Spirit of the West is a Canadian folk rock band known for its spirited blend of rock, folk, and Celtic music influences. Formed in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1983, the group initially began as a folk trio before expanding both their lineup and musical style to incorporate a broader rock sound. The band's core members, John Mann (vocals, guitar) and Geoffrey Kelly (flute, acoustic guitar), were later joined by Hugh McMillan, Vince Ditrich, Tobin Frank, and Matthew Harder. Over the decades, Spirit of the West developed a devoted following with their compelling storytelling and energetic performances.

The mid-1980s to the late 1990s represented the band's most prolific period. They released a string of albums that captured the vibrant essence of Canadian culture and issues through thoughtful lyrics and dynamic melodies. 1990's "Save This House" marked a significant breakthrough for the band, and the hit single "Home for a Rest" from the 1991 album "Go Figure" became an iconic drinking anthem in Canadian music, contributing to the band's enduring legacy. Albums like "Faithlift" (1993) and "Open Heart Symphony" (1996), which was recorded with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, showcased the band's versatility and willingness to push the boundaries of their sound. Despite changes in the music industry and personal challenges, including John Mann's battle with early-onset Alzheimer's, their catalog of work, including "Weights & Measures" (1997) and "Hit Parade" (1999), continued to resonate with fans, and Spirit of the West is remembered as one of Canada's most treasured musical acts.
