Hasret Gültekin (1971–1993) was an influential Turkish folk musician, poet, and saz player whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 22. He was born in Sivas, Turkey, and displayed an extraordinary talent in music from a very young age. Gültekin started playing the bağlama, a traditional Turkish stringed instrument, when he was only nine years old, and he rapidly became a proficient and passionate performer. Throughout his brief career, he became known for his unique singing style and his innovative techniques on the saz, integrating traditional Anatolian music with contemporary sounds and themes.
Gültekin's music was deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Anatolia, yet it resonated with the modern struggles and aspirations of the people. His albums, such as "Rüzgarın Kanatlarında" (On the Wings of the Wind), "Seçmeler" (Selections), and "Gece İle Gündüz Arasında" (Between Night and Day), showcase his versatility and depth as an artist. His compositions often featured lyrical poetry that addressed themes of love, nature, and the human experience, earning him a loyal following. Unfortunately, his burgeoning career was abruptly ended when he was one of the 35 victims of the horrific Sivas Massacre in 1993, where a mob set fire to the Madımak Hotel during a cultural festival. His death was an immense loss to the traditional music scene in Turkey, but his legacy continues to inspire and influence new generations of musicians and music lovers.
