Charlie Shavers was a jazz trumpeter who made his mark during the swing era and beyond. Born in 1920 in New York City, Shavers was known for his virtuosic trumpet playing and arranging skills. He got his big break in 1937 when he joined John Kirby's Sextet, where he played and arranged for seven years. Shavers went on to perform with notable artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Tommy Dorsey, and Billie Holiday.
Shavers was not only a talented performer but also a composer. His composition "Undecided" became a jazz standard. Throughout his career, he led his own groups and participated in various all-star jazz sessions. Shavers continued to tour and record until his untimely death from throat cancer in 1971 at the age of 50.
