Hadewych van Gent is a Dutch cellist and singer known for her unique ability to blend cello playing with vocal performance into a single, distinctive sound. She began her musical journey at just 12 years old at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and made a remarkable solo debut at the Concertgebouw when she was only 17. After completing her studies in Amsterdam, she moved to London to earn a Master’s degree with honors at the Royal Academy of Music, where she further honed her skills in both cello and voice. Hadewych’s adventurous approach embraces working with contemporary composers, expanding the repertoire that combines singing and cello playing.
Her album *Voice*, released as part of the Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Series in collaboration with Linn Records, explores this synthesis of voice and cello, reflecting the diverse musical influences that inspire her. She has performed widely, including at prestigious venues like The Barbican in London and the Dutch National Opera, collaborating with artists such as Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Plínio Fernandes. Hadewych plays a Jean Baptiste Vuillaume cello on loan from the Royal Academy of Music and continues to innovate by premiering new works that highlight her unique artistic voice.
