Ernst Theis is a renowned Austrian conductor born in Upper Austria. He studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he completed multiple instrumental courses of study, including trumpet. Theis began his conducting career with the Austrian Chamber Symphony, serving as both artistic director and managing director from 1991 to 2003. During this period, he focused on classical modernist, contemporary, and Viennese classical music. In 1996, he won first prize at the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music and became Kapellmeister at the Vienna Volksoper. His career has taken him to numerous orchestras worldwide, including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, and several German radio orchestras.
From 2003 to 2013, Theis was the chief conductor of the Dresden State Operetta, transforming the institution through his visionary approach and leading it into the recording market. He has also been involved in the "RadioMusiken" project, collaborating with institutions like the Academy of the Arts Berlin and the German CD label CPO. Theis records with various orchestras for CPO, exploring a wide range of repertoire from early Viennese classicism to avant-garde music. His recent releases include works by Lortzing, Lehár, and Kálmán, showcasing his versatility in operetta and orchestral music.
