Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991 by Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) and Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad). The band started as a traditional black metal outfit, but over time, incorporated elements of industrial and heavy rock into their sound, creating a distinctive style that has set them apart in the metal genre. Satyricon's music is characterized by dark themes, aggressive riffs, and complex arrangements, often complemented by Satyr's profound and haunting vocal delivery.
Achieving international acclaim with pioneering works like "Nemesis Divina" (1996) and "Volcano" (2002), the band solidified their standing in the black metal scene, earning a reputation for their intense and evocative music. Their evolution continued with albums like "Now, Diabolical" (2006) and "The Age Of Nero" (2008), which showcased a more straightforward and polished approach while maintaining their core intensity. The band's later works, including "Satyricon" (2013), "Deep Calleth Upon Deep" (2017), and the live album "Live at the Opera" (2015), where they performed with the Norwegian National Opera Chorus, highlight their willingness to experiment and push the limits of the genre. With the Remastered 2021 versions of their early classics "Dark Medieval Times" and "The Shadowthrone", Satyricon has both preserved and rejuvenated their legacy for new generations of metal fans. In collaboration with Edvard Munch’s art through "Satyricon & Munch" (2022), the band continues to express their affinity for the symbiotic relationship between music and the other arts.
