Piqsiq

Piqsiq (pronounced "pilk-silk") is a contemporary Inuit throat singing duo composed of sisters Kayley Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik, who blend the ancient tradition of their cultural vocal art with innovative soundscapes and modern performance styles. Hailing from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, they have dedicated themselves to preserving and revitalizing the deep-rooted practice of throat singing, a form of musical expression historically performed by Inuit women while the men were away hunting. Piqsiq's music is atmospheric and haunting, with a hypnotic quality that reflects the vastness and beauty of the Arctic landscapes.

Through their artistry, Piqsiq harnesses the unique sounds of katajjaq, or throat singing, where two people create a song by setting up rhythmic patterns and vocal tones that push and pull against each other. With a discography that includes ethereal renditions of classical pieces like "Ave Maria," to the innovative adaptation of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," the duo not only showcases their cultural heritage but also pushes its boundaries, incorporating elements of darkwave, ambient, and experimental sounds. Their albums like "Taaqtuq Ubluriaq: Dark Star" and "Altering the Timeline" offer a contemporary interpretation of their ancestral art form, garnering them international acclaim and a growing fanbase enchanted by their stirring performances and cultural storytelling.
