Peña Branca e Xavantinho were a revered Brazilian sertanejo duo known for their significant contributions to the música caipira genre, which is akin to North American country music but with distinctly Brazilian roots and themes. The duo comprised of brothers José Ramiro Sobrinho (Peña Branca) and Ranulfo Ramiro da Silva (Xavantinho), who were born in the small rural town of Igarapava in the state of São Paulo.
Coming from a family of musicians, Peña Branca and Xavantinho started their music career in the 1960s, gaining recognition for their authentic interpretation of traditional Brazilian folk music, as well as their ability to bring contemporary elements to the genre. Their tight harmonies, intricate guitar playing, and the poetic nature of their lyrics captivated audiences across Brazil. They collaborated with other famous Brazilian musicians, such as Renato Teixeira and Rolando Boldrin, and their music has been influential in preserving the cultural heritage of countryside Brazil. The albums "Coração Matuto," "O Melhor de Pena Branca e Xavantinho," "Ribeirão Encheu," and others, showcase their talent and commitment to the folklore and storytelling that are integral to sertanejo music. Xavantinho's death in 1999 marked the end of the duo, but Peña Branca continued performing and upholding their legacy until his own passing in 2010.
