Matthew Nelson is a clarinetist and educator known for his dynamic performances and dedication to both contemporary and lesser-known classical works. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Clarinet at the University of Louisville, where he also performs with the Louisville Winds woodwind quintet and the Grawemeyer Players, the school’s contemporary music ensemble. Nelson has built an international reputation as both a performer and teacher, with appearances and master classes across the United States, Europe, and Asia, including recent engagements in Russia and Mongolia.
A passionate advocate for new music, Nelson has collaborated with acclaimed composers like Kaija Saariaho, Joël-François Durand, and Bruce Quaglia, and his recordings often feature premiere works and adventurous solo repertoire. His recent releases, such as Meditations and Tributes: Works for Solo Clarinet and C.H. Lloyd: Chamber Music for Clarinet, showcase his versatility and commitment to expanding the clarinet’s musical landscape.
