Peter Benoit was a Belgian composer and music educator who lived from 1834 to 1901. He's considered the founding father of the Flemish music movement in Belgium. Benoit studied at the Brussels Conservatory and won the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1857. He composed a variety of works including operas, oratorios, and piano pieces, with many of his compositions celebrating Flemish culture and using Dutch language texts. In 1867, Benoit founded the Flemish School of Music in Antwerp (later the Royal Flemish Conservatory), which he directed until his death. His most famous works include the oratorio "Lucifer" and the cantata "De Schelde."
