Jan Čižmář is a renowned lutenist and historical instruments performer known for his versatility and extensive contributions to the world of early music. He initially studied guitar and musicology in Brno before expanding his musical horizons at the Royal College of Music in London, where he began learning the lute under the guidance of Jakob Lindberg. Čižmář further honed his skills at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, studying with notable teachers such as Nigel North and Joachim Held. He is a founder of the Czech Lute Society and teaches at several institutions, including the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno. His performances span Europe, Asia, and the USA, featuring collaborations with prominent ensembles like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
Čižmář's recent projects include the album "Losy, Weiss: Lute Music in Prague & Vienna Circa 1700," which focuses on works by Jan Antonín Losy and Silvius Leopold Weiss, and "Codex Jacobides / Praga circa 1600," which explores historical Czech sources of lute music. His work is characterized by meticulous research and a deep appreciation for historical music, often incorporating unique and original period versions of compositions.
