Ustad Hamid Hussain was a renowned sarangi player from the illustrious Muradabad Gharana. Born in Rampur in 1923, he received his initial training from his father, Abid Husain, and grandfather, Haider Husain Khan. He also learned from his maternal uncle, Ustad Ali Jan of Rampur. Hamid Hussain joined All India Radio, Delhi, at the age of 15 and later moved to Bombay in 1939. During his career, he accompanied many prominent vocalists, including Ustad Fayyaz Khan and Begum Akhtar. He was known for his generosity in teaching music to both professional and amateur students. After India's independence, he joined Radio Pakistan and served in Karachi until his death in 1980.
Hamid Hussain's legacy includes several recordings, often featuring jugalbandis (duets) with other musicians, such as his brother Zahid Hussain and Sharif Hussain on the sarod. His contributions to classical music are celebrated through albums like "Ustad Hamid Hussain - Zahid Hussain Vol.1" and "Vol.2," which highlight his mastery of the sarangi and his role in preserving traditional compositions.
