The Low Anthem is an American indie folk band that elusively traverses the boundaries of folk, rock, and experimental music. Starting out in Providence, Rhode Island, the band was formed in 2006 by Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky, two Brown University students who shared a passion for music that is both eclectic and richly textured. The addition of classically trained composer Jocie Adams in 2007 rounded out the core of a group known for its cerebral lyricism and innovative instrumentation.
The band gained critical acclaim with the release of "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin" in 2008, an album that embodies their penchant for haunting melodies and lyrical depth. The album, which was reissued the following year under a larger record label, Nonesuch Records, significantly raised their international profile. The Low Anthem is known for their ability to reinvent their sound with each new release; from the lo-fi clarity of "What The Crow Brings" (2007) to the ethereal and richly orchestrated "Smart Flesh" (2011), and the experimental textures of "eyeland" (2016). With their 2018 album, “The Salt Doll Went to Measure the Depth of the Sea," The Low Anthem took listeners on a metaphoric journey with a conceptual and minimalist approach, proving their enduring commitment to pushing the boundaries of folk music and storytelling.
